While firefighting is generally best left to the professionals, there are rare occasions when it makes more sense to put a fire out on your own. It is important to know the kind of fire extinguishers for this purpose.

Class A fire extinguishers are used for fires involving ordinary combustible materials such as wood, fabric, paper products, many plastics and rubber.

Class B extinguishers are used to extinguish burning flammable liquids, gasses, greases and similar materials.

Class C extinguishersare used for fires involving live electrical equipment where safety dictates that extinguishers employ non-conductive agents.

Class D extinguishers are required to extinguish certain burning metals such as magnesium, titanium, zirconium, sodium and potassium.

ABC or BC extinguishers (special extinguishers) can be used on fires that combine several different kinds of flammables.
